Open Heart Surgery

We just finished watching the Odd Life of Timothy Green.

Like all things sad and sentimental, Big Kid got a bit choked up with emotion when it ended.

"Aww, what's wrong, buddy? It was good, right?" I asked.

"Yes," he sniffled, "It was just so sad. Too good and too sad."

"Yeah, it was sad, but happy too!" I offered. He looked miserable.

"Mom, why do I feel so much?" He asked, eyes watery.

"Because you're an awesome guy. It is truly one of the things that makes you so special, you feel and care so much more than your average person. It's a good thing, people like you can change the world."

"It might be good for the rest of the world, but I'm not so sure it's good for me."

To be honest, I'm not so sure it's always good for him either.

"Come here and hug me, you sweet thing. I love your emotional self, boy."

"I wish I could have surgery to make my heart just a little bit smaller," he said through tears.

And I wish the rest of us could have surgery to make our hearts a little bit bigger.

What an AWESOME son you have. Definitely nurture this part of him, even when idiots make fun of him for it in the future, because you're right: people like him DO change the world.

Big kid is lucky to have a mom like you!

I was like that as a kid too (even now). People around me weren't as sensitive about it as you are though, so I just learned to not let it show too much.

Regardless, I have to agree with him that it sucks to feel so much. It's good when it's something happy, but horrible and at times almost unbearable if it's something sad.

Anyway, I think it's great that you are so supportive of him and he talks to you about his feelings so freely. I'm sure he appreciates that and it must help him deal with it.
