Goodbye Kiss

Today I walked Big Kid to school and the kids were all waiting outside of the classroom for the teacher to open the door. I sat him down next to a group of boys and went to kiss his temple before leaving. My lips smacked the air near his ear and as I leaned in further to complete the kiss, I saw a quick flash of embarrassment and annoyance. It was then that I realized he had moved away on purpose.

We are officially at the point where looking cool in front of a bunch of punks is more important than one last snuggle from mom.

I understand. Really, I do.

But I still sniffled about it a bit on the walk home.

Uggh...my 12 year old is like that. Snuggles at home, but in public - forget about it. Little kid kisses were supposed to be stored away like money in the bank for the tween years and beyond. If only I could make a daily withdrawal, I'd be good. Hang in there-we've all been there, or will be at some point.

It's times like these we wish they could've stayed "babies" forever...

My nine year old daughter is starting to not want to hold my hand in public anymore...

I'm sorry.

Oh please say it isn't so. Second grade? (right?) Right now my little Bud fights his Daddy to see who gets momma kisses first. I don't want that to go away.

Can you do your goodbye kiss before getting out of the car? Or maybe you can come up with a secret "kiss", like a special handshake.

Here IS "kissing" to look forward too... I picked up my 9th grader from a band performance a few weeks back. She picked up her instrument and quickly gave a high-five to a boy standing near her. She jumped in and said "By the way, that was Brandon". I asked "Brandon? Like your boyfriend Brandon?", she said yes! I pulled over because I was laughing so hard! She received a text from him seconds later saying "that was the weirdest goodbye". We CAN'T let her live it down! Good night kisses are now high-fives, all of our relatives and friends now know and also give her high-fives. She should have just gone with a wave.

My eldest daughter is also in second grade and so far kisses are still okay. But I am not looking forward to the "awww... Mom... Not in front of my friends" cheek wipe away any remnants of a goodbye kiss. Especially from my son who is almost 3 years old. He gives the best cuddles!

Mine is only three, and it already makes me sad and teary to think that that day is going to come WAY sooner than I would like it to. :(
