An open letter to parents everywhere:

People, if we're going to do this whole Tooth Fairy thing, we need to do it right. We need to establish a reasonable price and stick with it, universally.

One of Big Kid's friends got an iPod for losing his first tooth. AN IPOD FOR LOSING HIS FIRST TOOTH. That is setting a dangerous precedent and seriously screws things up for those of us who give a dollar.

I read a forum recently where a parent transcribed a letter from her child to the tooth fairy asking why she got $5 and her friend got $100. $100? I refuse to believe it. This kid better be lying, or there had better been some drunken "it looked like $1 in the dark" type mistake that the parents are still LOLing about. I do know that at least 2 kids in Big Kid's class got $20 last year for losing their first tooth and I thought that was borderline crazy.

I say we try to keep it around $1--maybe an occasional $5 if we're stuck without change or there are special circumstances. I did a $2 bill the other day, but in fairness, I had no idea he was going to lose a tooth and it was the smallest bill around.

Anyway, if we collaborate on this it will make our stories more believable. What Tooth Fairy would pay $100 per tooth in this economy? Let's keep it within the realm of probability here. A Tooth Fairy dealing in iPods sounds downright shady to me.

Thank you for your support in this matter,
Ashley

Although we are done with the tooth fairy around here, I totally agree with you. We always left $1 (if we remembered to leave anything), but my oldest daughter once lost a tooth at Gramma & Grampa's... TF left $5 there. From then on, the kids always tried to maneuver a sleepover there if TF was due for a visit. :)

I literally laghed out loud - this is too true, I'm worried about this already and we don't even have teeth yet. An IPOD? Seriously? I didn't even get that for Christmas as a teen....

I say it should be $5 for the first tooth (max) and $1 (max) for every tooth there after. I have 4 kids and a mortgage. I cannot afford more than that. Be reasonable people!

That is just ridiculous.

Our fairy gives $5 for the first tooth (that is such a big traumatic event ya know) and .50 thereafter. If s/he is having a good day, the last tooth might fetch $1.

We got the poor fairy here, and we're okay with that.

My now 18yo got $1, my current-tooth-loosing 6 yo gets $1. I'm with you!

WOWZERS!!! I hope that those Tooth Fairies would come visit "Chucky" when he loses his teeth!!
How do you know when your child is going to lose a tooth{my son's are not loose for long- then BAM! it's out} or at that make plans for the Tooth Fairy to bring an ipod?
Everytime "Chucky" lose's a tooth I am never prepared, I need to get one of those Tooth Fairy "grab bags" filled with gold plated skate boards, 50" inch plasmas, xbox's, Mercedes Benz's, shit I better take out a second mortgage for just the Tooth Firy, what about the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and HOLY SHIT what are they going to want for Halloween soon? I will turn all the lights off and risk getting toilet papered- I can clean that shit up in one day, and use it for when I am DIRT POOR for giving "Chucky" that new Hummer for his 11th birthday:) LMAO!!!

Hold up. $100? An iPod? What the fuck??? I can barely manage my mortgage...I'm supposed to pay out $100? Oh hell no. My kids are getting Susan B. Anthony $1 coins for their piggy banks, like I got.

I agree 100%! Thanks for pointing this out! An ipod for losing a tooth is just ridiculously materialistic on the part of the parents...

our tooth fairy has a secret stash of two dollar bills and gold sacajawea dollars on hand. she visited dixie for the first time last week.

Don't worry. These are going to be the kids that end up being on "My Super Sweet 16", that get upset at their parents for getting them the wrong type of Mercedes. Everyone will hate them for their trashiness and soulless existence. The ONLY way the $100.00 is acceptable is if the parent said "Oh wow, look at how generous someone was to you. Now you pick your favorite charity to donate 95% of that to." The iPod is just creepy. Watch out for those parents, they are obviously either: buying their kids love or secret perverts that know how to tempt a kid into liking them.

Holy moly! Talk about spoiled kids! $100 for growing up? A flippin' ipod? Sheesh!

I always got $1 from the tooth fairy, and my kids are getting the same once they get that age. *Maybe* $5 for the first tooth, but that's pushing it.

$100? An ipod?

I got a quarter. Sometimes left on the counter with a note that said, "Sorry, didn't have time to stick it under the pillow. I'll be back for the tooth." Both of which only seemed to appear after I asked my mom why my tooth had been neglected.

Yeesh. I'm gonna have to start knocking out my teeth. I could get out of debt with those prices.

the rate at which my oldest is losing teeth would require a hefty bank loan to keep him in iPods + $100 bills. no time to save up for that.

i agree with the $5 first tooth, $1 thereafter assessment.

I JUST had this conversation with my 5 year old the other day. He's convinced that one of his teeth is loose. (I didn't check because the whole thing creeps me out...) Anyway, he asked if the TF is real, and if he would be getting a nickel for every lost tooth. Hell, yes, a nickel sounds great! :) So, he's not even convinced that there is a tooth fairy... no one better tell him that there is and she sometimes gives ipods and $100 bills!

I always got change - whatever was in my tooth fairies pocket on the day my tooth was lost, I think.

A dollar sounds good to me.

We always do a gold dollar for each tooth, sometimes the Tooth Fairy is abnormally busy and it takes a day or two to get to our house. My husband works a 2nd job at a liquor store so he is always nabbing the gold dollars so that we have a stockpile. We started using the gold dollars because the kids want to save them, not spend them.

My kids are lucky if the tooth fairy even comes. We use the excuse that they must've stayed up too late, and that she had already flown by.... lol
When she does catch up with them, they get $2 for a front tooth, and $5 for a molar... that's in Canadian dollars though ;)

I'll tell you what kind of tooth fairy give $100 a JACKASS Tooth Fairy that is going to give the kid a sports car on thier 16th b-day...and then wonder why they have to loan the kid money @ 25, so they can pay off 20K in credit card debt.....

Prior to my kids losing teeth I had planned to leave special coins, like a Sacajawea (butchered spelling!) dollar coin, or 50 cent pieces, etc. I had some foreign coins (no real value) that I was planning to mix in with the "real" money to spice things up. But I wasn't prepared when the time came. I usually leave $2. The one time my poor boy had a traumatic dentist visit that resulted in a pulled tooth he got $10 and a Bionicle.
I am anything but consistent. ;-)

$100? An Ipod? My son got $10 for his first tooth, and that was only because he lost it at bedtime, and that was all the tooth fairy had at the moment. Now its 50cents or $1.

An iPod is ridiculous. I would go with the dollar. That's plenty.
