Wrong Education

At one point while we were trying to figure out what to do about Big Kid's school situation (mentioned in the post below this one), he was determined to stick it out in his current school.

"Okay, but no matter what happens this year, I want you to be in a smaller school environment for middle school. Whether it's private school or a charter school, I don't know, just something smaller. I'm going to work hard on that all of this year--it may involve testing into a private school or something and you're just going to have to do it, it won't be a big deal."

He sighed in a dramatic but relieved way. "Okay. I've been meaning to talk to you about that. I'm glad you mentioned it."

"Really?"

"I heard the kids at that middle school," he dropped his voice to a dramatic whisper,"smoke the marijuana," he hissed.

I would categorize this moment as being in my top 10 "Hardest Not to Laugh" parenting moments reel. But I nodded very seriously. It was serious. It is serious. Still hilarious, though.

But that's when I knew he definitely couldn't go to public middle school.

Wow! What a thing for him to say. I have read your blog posts today with great interest. We are English, living in SC. We are very lucky to have our 2 oldest boys in private education, thanks to the fortunate situation of my husbands job.

I found your blog through circle of moms competition (well done, by the way) and have found it a fascinating read.

I don't want to sound patronizing, but I think you are doing exactly the right thing for your family and big kid. The way you express your daily conversations is awesome (loving the posts about little kid and Boy Scouts, my eldest had them in and school, he is not interested), and I always get a but excited when I see you have done another post!

Please keep up the good work, and if you fancy looking me up, I am a fellow blogger.

Love your posts!

Very Reefer Madness of him, that comment.

Awesome parenting move, Ashley. I am a public school teacher and I fully support parents doing whatever it takes to get their kid into the best situation possible. Or out of the worst. So, nicely done. I am sure Big Kid will flourish at the new school.
