Your Baby Can't Read

Big Kid is seriously disturbed by those "Your baby can read!" commercials.

"Mom, if babies can read, don't you fink little kid should be able to read? 'Cuz he can't. Not even close."

"Babies can't read."

"I seen 'em do it on commercials and stuff. Some babies can. Our baby can't and he's 3."

"Babies don't really need to read though."

"Yeah but eventually you gotta be able to read and I fink little kid should be learnin' some time soon, you know? I could read when I was 3."

"Yeah, you're different from a lot of people. I know what you're saying though, he does need to learn some stuff."

I bought the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVDs because that's how Big Kid learned to read, but so far little kid just screams for Karate Kid or Willy Wonka every time I try to put it on.

He'll never learn to read at this rate.

My 7 y.o. daughter is obsessed with this as well! She's convinced that the babies in the commercial are really, truly reading, and I can't convince her otherwise. I've taught 1st grade for many years now so I think I know what I'm talking about, but she won't have it. Very frustrating! It also makes me mad at how advertisers hook kids, but that's a whole different rant.

Lol. My bff got Riley some Baby Einstein videos for Christmas... she'll look at them but it's still not The Jungle Book. SIGH.

LOL...My 5 year old learned to read from The Letter Factory too. I put it on for my 2 year old and he was bored within a few minutes. Tonight my 5 year old read Diary of Whimpy Kid to me at bedtime - I dont think his brother will ever get there. At least our little kids can have each other and karate kid.

With Karate Kid and Willy Wonka, who needs to know how to read?

He knows that "if you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it" and is learning how to kick ass.

He's can practically graduate with those skills (or, at least you could when I was in school).

He'll read when the time comes. At least Big Kid is concerned for his brother - which is as it should be.

I haven't commented in a while, Not because I don't love your blog because I do, but more because I have just been shy and lurking... maybe you can turn the subtitles on for him? That's how my sister learned, I had to watch a bunch of movies with the subtitles on and one day she came up and asked me what that was and pointed to a word on the screen and then when ever she saw it she would say it, and slowly learned the other words too.

Just an Idea

Everybody is totally missing the point here. Obviously, little kid doesn't need to learn to read - he's already got a JOB. He's totally cracked the system. Skip all the school crap & just go to work when you're three. Duh.

My nearly 4 year old staunchly refuses to learn to read, or even learn the alphabet. He'd like little kid.

I love Jewelie's comment! He is learning important life skills - reading will come in due time.

That commercial really gets under my skin. I think it's the guilt from not reading to youngest son like we did the older two, but it really pissed me off that that crappy ad gave me bad-mom anxiety. (I don't let it anymore ;) ) Not even being a working mom gave me that anxiety--I'm firmly in the "We all do what works for us" camp, i.e. "I won't judge you if you don't judge me"--so I was totally knocked over experiencing it from a lousy infomercial...

I really like Angel's idea of subtitles!

Brought my boys to see The Squeakuel and saw that a new Karate Kid moving is coming soon. That should fuel little kid's drive to beat up babies!
