Entertainment

I made the mistake of introducing my boys to the magic of Pee-Wee Herman. They freaking LOVED HIM from minute one. So I bought the first season on DVD (only $9 at Deepdiscountdvd.com), relieved that I found something they both liked and happy to relive the Saturday mornings of my childhood through them. Seemed like a great idea.

8 gazillion episodes of Pee-Wee's Playhouse later and I'm ready to stage a burglary of our Pee-Wee collection. This shit is intolerable. One episode per week, like the good old days, would be do-able but they can't stop at just one. The upside is that they sit there completely mesmerized and quiet, the downside is that Pee-Wee's voice will make an adult want to rupture their own ear drums with a rusty fishing hook within minutes.

I've been reading like crazy to keep my anxiety at bay (my dad's surgery is Thursday) and I finished Geek Love today and got Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and can't wait to get started on it. Geek Love was exactly what I needed--it was very weird, a little too "out there" at moments, but engaging, quick and enjoyable to read. I hope I fall in love with Outlander because I'm excited by the sheer size of it. I need a good, long book to get lost in.

I just remembered that I never finished our Amazon list of closet reader recommendations--I will do that. Mostly for myself, but I'll share it too. You all have interesting taste.

I loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse, too. The crazy little song at the intro, Geenie's mecka-lecki-hi-mecka-choni-ho, and the Penny cartoons...that apparantly have driven you over the edge. Just tell the boys that Cowboy Curtis rounded up all the videos and gave them to the cows to watch (?).

So would you recommend Geek Love? I had heard great things and wanted to read it, but your review was not completely stellar.

I hadn't heard of Outlander, but just checked Amazon for a synopsis, and HUBBA HUBBA, that sounds like a good one. Will be reading that. Is this a series?

I would recommend Geek Love, I did like it a lot. I'd be more likely to recommend it to someone who liked Dean Koontz or Stephen King, it's not Oprah's Book Club material or a future Classic or anything, but I have been having a really hard time getting into books lately and read it in just a few days. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It was well-written.

Outlander is a series, I guess.

I did really love Pee-wee at first too, we're just ODing on it right now. Maybe it will level out or I'll build up a tolerance to all the racket.

OMG Outlander is BEYOND good! Seriously, even DH got into it. Yes it's a series, but it kinda goes downhill after the first two. Well, really after the first one. But it sure is long! I think there's like 7 books in the series.

I used to love Pee Wee but the thought of listening to him OVER and OVER would drive me mad!

Have they started coming up with their own 'word of the day'.

Pee was banned in our house growing up... 4 children within 4 years of age all shouting like crazy at some random word was just too much for mom to handle.

Oh PeeWee! That is so going on my wishlist, right next to Weird Al's greatest hits DVD. I hooked my three boys on UHF, which had I remembered "...quivering bowl of dog snot..." might have rethought, but they love it. (Why is THAT okay in the van but Caillou and Max & Ruby make me want to drive off an overpass?)

I swam in Pee Wee's parents pool when I was little...He's from my town. He also got into a bit of trouble here...If you remember!

What about the Pee Wee movie? That shit was freaky deaky. Remember Big Marge, the truck driver? Now that's a classic.

Oh I don't envy you one bit . . . I couldn't stand him as a child, even :p

I loved, loved, loved PeeWee, and so did my kids---we have the VCR AND the DVD versions! The best Saturday morning show ever!
Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis . . . S. Epatha Merkerson as Reba the Mail Lady. . . Phil Hartman as Captain Carl---how cool is that?
I realize that 24/7 PeeWee could be annoying---but it could be much worse.

I miss Pee Wee. So much. I guess it means I'm psycho because I could watch him all day.
