Sick Day Home Work--UPDATE

Big Kid is home sick from school today. He's got a sniffly nose, a headache and a cough and says he was up all night. This means my morning is not going so great because little kid is much more difficult to deal with when Big Kid is home. He just loves to antagonize him (and me and the pets).

Since he's home, Big Kid will get to watch Obama's speech live. Then he's going to write one page stating how he can help our president improve our country, draw a picture of himself and Obama doing whatever it is they would do, and together we will mail it to the White House to show our support and to teach Big Kid that democracy means that you have a voice in your government and a desire to be involved, and that we're fortunate to have that privilege.

So take that, "it's not educational enough" Superintendent of Schools who is now on my shit list. Our sick day will probably end up smarter than your school day.

EDITED: Awesome that some of you are also going to do the home work with your kids. If you're able to, let's mail the home work unfolded in manila envelopes, have your child address it (if possible) and write AMERICA'S HOME WORK somewhere on the front, so maybe our small effort will be noticed and Obama will get the message that many parents understood and appreciated his message.

Thank you, thank you! I am appalled at some of the responses I have read from our "educators" and alleged concerned parents.

Yeah, sure, there are going to be underlying messages that turn them all into socialist homosexuals!

When I was a kid, we would have been thrilled to get a message from the President of the United States.

That's such a great idea. I'm going to my mom's today to make sure my younger siblings got to see it, or to make them sit and watch it. The letter/essay is a great idea, I'll have to run that by them ^__^.

Good for you, Ashley. Our school system was shut down today due to "illness". What that really means is that our superintendent was a big chicken.

That's such a great idea & I hope BigKid feels better!

love, love, love it! i hope big kid appreciates having you as his mama because that's amazing. i still think some parents are complete assholes for not allowing the president to speak to their children.

Jason, Bush Sr. actually spoke to students on the eve of re-election and his political plan for education was part of his speech...so basically he was campaigning to students. Which I'd STILL be fine with as long as both candidates had the chance.

Also, I don't believe it was quite the national news-I'm keeping my kids out of school-he's indoctrinating Hitler's youth-sort of Hoopla. Reagan addressed students at some point too, this is not unheard of and even if it was--sometimes change is good. Good for you for doing research before getting your panties in a bunch though--the herd mentality is the scariest part of the whole thing.

Chrissy, that's unbelievable. Super chickenshit action right there, I can't believe they shut the school down.

To be fair, as I've just read a transcript... he does mention Harry Potter. He's obviously trying to turn the nation's youth into devil-worshipping heretics with that bit.

As a Canadian I am looking at my Southern neighbours shaking my head and asking, "why?". Maybe Obama can be our Prime Minister, I think he'd be more appreciated up here.

Meghan, the majority of us aren't crazy, it's just that the crazy ones are much louder and have a lot more time.

Some of us try to change things through the democratic process of voting while others do it by making everyone's lives a living hell, bringing guns to healthcare rallies, refusing to recognize the validity of official documents, teaching youth to ignore and distrust the president, praying for his death and/or publicly insisting that he's the anti-christ or comparable to the most evil human being in history, and basically complicating everything to the point of making any type of progress an impossibility. Then they get to bitch about no progress.

Unfortunately, the crazy tactic seems to work and gets a lot of publicity so I can see how the rest of us look ape-shit insane to the rest of the free world. It's embarrassing and sad.

Absolutely - what you said.

Thanks for the idea! My kindergardner is watching it tomorrow at school. We will be doing the same thing when she gets home!

Hi! I've been a lurker for sometime now. I just have to say that I love you!!! I wish I was able to put my thoughts into words. My child gets to watch President Obama on Friday. I am glad she will get to see it at school even if it is after the fact. I just can't believe the craziness associated with this speech. Thanks for voicing your opinion.

Oh I hope Big Kid feels better soon!

Oh no, they've already managed to brainwash you.

Wow! Great idea. My child is only in kindergarten but I think we can still draw a picture and send it.

I am so glad you are doing that with Big Kid. I was so disappointed that so many people weren't willing to find out what the message was about but instead made such a huge deal out of a simple speech that has been made by other presidents in the past.

Good for you, sister. I was appalled by the response. He's our President. He's our friggin' PRESIDENT. I didn't agree with 99% of what Pres. GWB said or did, but he was my president and I respected that office. This response + Cong. Joe Wilson have me concerned about the crazy in this country. Entirely too much crazy.
