in the post below is from my attempts at costume making. That's right, we're back in the saddle with the parrot costume. I went to Wal-mart and got my stuff and I begged and whined and pleaded with Mr. Ashley to draw the felt feathers for me and he did. There's an excellent chance things will turn out okay in that department. I still need to iron everything together and dye tights yellow, but I think it's going to happen.
Oh! I want Big Kid to have a hoop earring. Can anyone think of a cheap, easy way to do this? I don't even know where to get fake earrings and I don't want to be paying a lot for it. I wonder if the local costume store would have one?

My brother had a magnetic earring in high school...couldn't you get a couple of round magnets (from the magnet tree maybe) and somehow attach wire to them to make a hoop earring? Just thinking of ideas...
For the earring, what about bending a yellow pipe cleaner into a hoop. Then attach it to a really thin piece of elastic thread. Tie the elastic to fit snugly around his ear, and the hoop can dangle near his ear lobe.
That whole feather conversation in the midst of the blood and gore was just hilarious. I can't believe you even remembered that with all of the excitement!
Since I just now got my ears pierced (yes, at age 33), I know for a fact that there are clip on hoops, because I wore them in college. I think I used to get them at Wal-Mart, because I wasn't all that spendy back then. They had gold and silver- pretty big ones too. Aye Matey!
The cheapest way would probably be some ice cubes held onto his ear for about ten minutes, then a needle stuck through it, then he can use one of your earrings.
You know I'm kidding, right?
i can remember wearing a drapery clip as an earring on halloween when i was about 5!

You can get clip-on earrings at thrift stores, Wal-Mart or Claire's :)
I can't think of anything for an earring, but did you get an eye patch?
One of my online friends made her son a Parrot costume. It's beautiful. E-Mail me through my blog and I will send you the pic.
Don't laugh but.....if you have a Mrs Potato Head you can use her earring. The kids at the preschool I work at love to put them on and they are ouch free.
Good luck with the costume....I'm sure it'll turn out very cute.
We have these Hallween stores that pop up all over the place this time of year, and they've got what you're looking for in the Pirates of the Carribean section. Try the adult area if you can't find it in the kids area.
I love the potato head idea my kids also do this.
Or you could just take him to the local Claire's and get his ear pierced ya know for the sake of the costume!!

I think I am going to give up holidays. All of them. This is too much work.
