Quick Question

Why the hell is milk so expensive? It's $4 a gallon here. Last time I checked, there was no shortage of cows. I want to know what is going on. Something so boring and essential should not impact my grocery budget. For $7 more I could get a bottle of wine. (Yeah, I'm a cheap date)

I call shenanigans.

somewhere, and god only knows where, I read we are importing our milk to China.
They are getting it cheaper than we are.

Don't they have ebay? Buyer pays shipping!

Here in Mississippi, I pay over $5.00 a gallon for milk. It's ridiculous!

I ask this question. Often.

BTW - Heart the new look! Telling it like it is? ALWAYS and FOREVER!!

OMG! It's under $3 in Ohio - butt - there is a huge dairy in the area, so they can't claim increase in shipping costs here, because they literally just drive 3 blocks and stock it.

Now ORGANIC milk, is over $5.

But you and beaches and better weather ;)

I ask myself this question every week when I am buying 5 gallons of milk...I have 3 boys that are big milk drinkers. Here in Michigan it is 3.29. I am sure it will be up over $4 before to long.

The thing that pisses me off is that I have to buy not one, not two, but THREE kinds of milk for my family. I don't drink the stuff because it makes me gag, but everyone else in the fam sucks it down like it's water. How about I just drink beer and save the family some $$$?

I'm in Mississippi, too, and I pay about $4 a gallon. It's flippin ridiculous.

I asked the guy at the grocery store and he said it's gas prices that drove the price up so much. It figures- we go through a gallon in two days, the girls love the milk..alot. BTW- love the new look, it's a keeper..

I always ask this question it is FREAKIN crazy, I just bought 2 gallons I hope they will last a week. I am cheap and buy the kiddos store brand (publix) and it was 3.49 but then I bought myself name brand cause I like the sweet acidophilus and it was $5.19!!! Those cows must be demanding more benefits.

Also have you checked the price of orange juice it also is way too overpriced we drink tons of this also.

Fidel likes the expensive milk and it's like $5.89. I could buy milk at Costco for half that but he has a "refined palate".

Yep. Milk in GA is over 5.00...

I can find milk on sale for $3.50 a gallon here in Texas. I googled "why is the price of milk so high?" and got all sorts of answers. I'm not sure which ones I believe. Stuff about rising transportation costs, rising prices of corn which feed the cows (because of that damn ethanol crap - don't get me started on how annoying it is that Joe Citizen has to pay more for groceries so that Suzie Green can try to save the environment), sick cows that decreased supply (while demand stayed the same or increased), blah blah blah.

Oh, I read this in the Washington Post the other day and thought of your blog's new look - the 50s housewife thing. This lady says that even though we try to pretend like we've evolved past that Mrs. Cleaver, Martha Stewart, happy-homemaker thing, that "deep down, we have a perfectly respectable desire to create an attractive, peaceful haven for our families and ourselves."

Here is the article:

Finally! Lactose intolerance pays off!

I asked my husband once why it was so expensive, but I couldn't follow the answer. :) Something about farmers and money and ummm...something. It was too complex for me. I was looking for something simple, like, "The cows union asked for more money." I would have been able to follow that one.

Oh, I also wanted to point out (since no one else has, and because I'm anal like this) that the cute cow has a mistake on her sign. She has udders, not utters.

I know, I know. I'm annoying.

Renee said...

Oh yeah, and one more thing. I think it should just be udder (singular). Hands off my udder. She could say "Hands off my teats" if she wanted. But I'm pretty sure each cow just has one udder.

Anyone know about cows, to confirm this?

Sorry to clog up your comments with my random banter.

I'm going to keep leaving comments and see if you keep posting them all to the blog. At some point you will have to stop.

Hahahaha! Ok, first up: carrot cake for breakfast. I love you! You rock! Second: location is "hiding from my kids". This confirms it - you rock! That is freakin' hilarious. Third: the cost of milk. My son drinks quantities of milk you would not believe if I told you, seriously. I told my husband I was spending $60 a month on milk and he did not believe me. He took over grocery shopping this year and low and behold -- he's looking for sales on MILK. Yeah, what's up with that.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, that's why we drink Costco. And Renee is correct, it's "udder". Sorry.

I noticed too that milk seems to be up. WTF? It's milk, not gold, people.

Renee, you know I love comments. You could leave random comments all day long, my love.

I used to drink organic milk but then I went broke, now I don't drink milk at all.

I was thinking that maybe the cow was homeschooled and that's why she's not very bright.

Renee said...

Although it always seems like a homeschooler wins the National Spelling Bee.

But that's kids, not cows.

jennifer said...

Holy cow!....ok, bad joke.

Jennifer said...

Well the homeschoolers do clog up Chick Fil A during traditional learning hours so maybe they are picking up bad spelling from the CFA cows. Et mor chikin. And travel in herds.

What does it say about me that I never noticed the price of milk? Or gas, for that matter. Hubby says it's because I never look at price tags. I say it's because I'm not exactly going to drive from grocery store to grocery store for price comparisons, thus wasting expensive gas. Doesn't that make me sound thrifty?

I just read an article today about how someone asked Rudy Guiliani how much a gallon of milk costs these days and he didn't know - he guessed way too low. And they were criticizing him for being out of touch with the common folk. Make sure you're not getting out of touch with the common folk, Deb. ;)

just how many men in their sixties would have a clue as to the cost of a gallon of milk? i dont think that is a reasonable line of attack.
