Um...No Really

Big Kid's birthday is Friday and he's been telling me that he wants me to make him a dinosaur cake (we have a big pirate party planned for the end of the month, this is his request for the family celebration). I figured if it was something he'd found on Nick Jr., then chances are I could possibly create something that vaguely resembled it or ask Publix to.

So today I asked him to show me and THIS is what he thinks I will whip up for him. Hmmm. I could swing the volcano part, but the intricate dino cookies??? Where the hell will I get those? Could a grocery store bakery do that for me? Would a baker bake a dozen dino cookies for me at an unridiculous price with very little prior notice?

I suggested we look for another cake and he wasn't happy with that idea. I suggested plastic dinosaurs and he explained that the cookie dinosaurs were his "favowite fing about dat cake".

Sorry kid, your mom isn't Martha. Your mom is also pretty damn tired this week, anniversary of your glorious birth or not. We may have to compwomise.

Finding the cookie cutters would be the only hard part since the recipe calls for you to use prepackaged cookie dough... and to make it a little easier on you and involve Big Kid, why don't you let HIM do the decorating... that way if they're not totally perfect, you won't have to take the fall. Besides, if he decorates them himself, maybe he'll be super proud of them no matter how they turn out??

Good luck with this!! I'm sure you'll figure something out... you always seem to!

That is too funny!

I think I say that everytime.

I don't do baking so that looks way out of my league of going to the store and picking out a cake.

When I have kids I will make sure they don't have access to the internet.

Ashley!! I don't know if it will pass Big Kid approval or not, but right now Target has these great looking cupcake molds. They have a dinosaur one. I guess once the cupcakes have baked, you pop them out of the mold, assemble, frost, and voila, no cake cutting! Now, I can't vouch for if they actually POP out of said cupcake molds, but if they do, it would be a great idea. And they are 14.99 at Target. Maybe worth a look. That way you don't have to recreate the Jurassic era.

I agree, finding dino cookie cutters will be the hardest part. I have faith in you! You can totally do that cake!

You could always try contacting pink ellie on the bargain board on BBC she makes the cutest cookies. I love to hear about all the stuff your kids do. I hope big kid has a happy birthday!!

Do you have one of those stores or bakeries nearby that does the cookie bouquets? They should have no problem making the dino cookies & they're not too expensive.

Do you have a Michaels by you? I'm sure they would have those cookie cutters there. And they have cool concentrated food coloring gel (Wiltons), you just use a little with white frosting and the colors are really bright. I made some crazy caterpillar cake once and got supplies from there. Good luck!

You should check out The Rolling Pin for the cookie cutters. They usually have a pretty good selection of cool cookie cutters. I'm sure you could find some online, too, but if you're having the party this weekend (like we are for Katie) you might not be able to get them in time for the party.
Good Luck!

So BK just trolls the internet looking for cakes for you to make? Good thing I haven't told P about the internet yet.

I have no time to make cakes with cookies attached to them, even if you are allowed to use pre-made dough (what other kind is there?)

Have fun and you know we want to see a pic of the final result.

Come on that is totally doable right?? (I have a great and talented lady that I found when E was a baby that does all cakes in this household.)

Chay's 2nd birthday is Sunday and I'm running into the same problem! Ray insists on having a big fancy cake for him -- with cars and props and whatnot. Nevermind that I can't bake or even decorate! A Publix cake is just going to have to suffice. And I'm sure Ray is going to give me a whatfor!

God bless ya. I feel your pain ...

They have ones and I have ordered just a few cookies from them before. It is much less that way! I think you have to order a min of 6. And they do over night delivery!

Good luck!

Well, I make cakes. If I was a little closer to you, I would totally make a cake for BK. Anyhoo, Publix has this dinosaur cake, plus a couple of other ones.

I also wanted to say, if you wanted to try to make the cake that you posted, you could totally make the base, and then add plastic dinosaurs.

You can SO make that cake! I believe in you. The dinosaurs don't look all that hard to make.
